Oldsmobile introduced the 88 in 1949. With its early roots in NASCAR racing, the 88 helped change the identity of Oldsmobile from a conservative brand to one of performance pedigree. By 1957, the 88 was on its third generation of production. New for 1957 were design changes which included a lower roofline, and a larger hood and grille. The car was available in the entry level “Golden Rocket” or the mid-level “Super Golden Rocket.” The 88 offered potential buyers a number of different body style choices. Third generation production of the 88 was short, only running through the 1958 model year.

Mid-level Super 88’s were positioned between the 88 and top-of-the-line 98 with the Holiday designation signifying the hardtop body style. The distinctive three rear window design still looks great and the exhaust system is ported through the rear bumper. This 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 is presented in two-tone red and white which is accented by brilliant brightwork. The interior is completed in a two-tone white vinyl and black patterned material, featuring a clock, Wonder Bar radio and heater/defroster unit. A spare tire and jack are included with the vehicle with the proper liner materials being utilized. Exterior features on the car include fender skirts and dual sideview mirrors. The car rides on whitewall tires with factory wheel covers.

Importantly, this Super 88 is powered by the rare J-2 engine. For a mere $83.00, you could order the hot J-2 engine option featuring triple carburetors. With a 10:1 compression, the hopped up Rocket 371-cid V-8 yielded 300-hp. The powerplant is matched to an automatic transmission. Fewer than 750 1957 Oldsmobiles are reported to have been so equipped, making this Super 88 a rare reminder of this brand’s performance past.
