In 1955, GM introduced their all-new Task Force range of trucks that replaced the venerable Advance Design series that were built from 1947 through early 1955. The new truck had fresh new styling with a car-like grille and a wrap-around windshield. The “Thriftmaster” inline-six (as seen in this pickup) was supplanted with the 265 cubic Inch V-8, a first for GM pickups. The Task Force tucks could be had with 6-, 7-, or 8-foot beds, 12-volt electrical system, power steering, power brakes. Nineteen fifty-five also saw the introduction of the Cameo, considered the first pickup truck with car-like amenities marketed toward the suburban buyer. The Task Force trucks and their Blue Chip Series GMC counterparts sold extremely well in their run from 1955 through 1959, helping to make GM a sales leader in the light truck business.

Our featured 1956 Chevrolet 3100 pickup has been extensively restored and presents beautifully in correct Crystal Blue paint (code 734) with a 6-foot stepside bed. Showing just 10,000 miles, which is believed to be original according to the previous owner (the title states exempt), it has been restored to a high standard and has seen only light use since completion.

This was clearly a very nice truck to begin with, as evidence by the original paint on the firewall and the excellent body fit. This 3100 is fresh, exceptionally straight and ready for enjoyment. The wooden bed floor has been beautifully refinished and the bed features matching custom wood rails with period-style Chevrolet signage. One of the best features of the 1956 Task Force 3100 is the gorgeous front end styling, the last year to feature the iconic eggcrate grille. Chrome plating quality on the grilles, bumpers and trim is excellent.

Inside, the cab interior surfaces are finished in proper “dove gray” paint with a black upper dash panel over the dove gray face.. The seat has been reupholstered in the correct pattern and color vinyl, and correct utilitarian rubber mats line the floor. The original jack is in the correct location behind the seat, and this example is equipped with the optional heater mounted under the dash. This is of course a truck meant for work, so luxury is not exactly a strong suit, but it is however very correct; completely functional and a delight to drive.

When it comes to working, the tried and true Thriftmaster inline six runs strong and propels this truck down the road at what is best described as a “relaxed” pace. You won’t win drag races, but you will have fun out on the road. The three-speed manual gearbox is operated via a column-shifter, and rewards patience with a clean and smooth shifts. Brakes are very strong and handling is predictable on period-correct whitewall bias-ply tires. Once up and running, the manual steering is tight and reasonably precise. The refreshingly simple engine bay is exceptionally clean and very well detailed. It is clean and tidy with lots of room all around to work and nearly spotlessly clean. Function and reliability are the name of the game under the hood. The undercarriage is similarly clean, with all surfaces correctly finished and extremely well detailed.

Stylish and nostalgic, classic pickup trucks have a strong collector following. Thanks to the outstanding quality of this Chevrolet, it would be at home in a larger collection, or make a wonderful choice for a first time classic buyer. Mechanically simple and easy to use, even those new to the collector car world can quickly adapt, while more experienced collectors will feel right at home behind the wheel. The owner reports a comprehensive 108-point inspection was performed to ensure it is totally sorted and ready for use. Gorgeous to look at and a truckload of fun to drive, this is a no-disappointments Chevy truck that is ready for enjoyment.
