It fell to an independent automaker to build one of America’s most advanced post-war automobiles, and it is hard to imagine today the impact that Hudson’s “Step-Down” model had upon the market when it was introduced in 1948. Wide, low, and breathtakingly streamlined, the model pioneered unit-body construction on American cars. The result was a car that was exceptionally roomy and comfortable for an entire family, but it stood only 60 inches high and had a very low center of gravity. The handling and performance of top-of-the-line models was superb, resulting in Hudsons cleaning up at NASCAR races in the early 1950s.
This “junior model” is powered by a 232 cubic inch, 112 horsepower inline six-cylinder engine that is fueled by a single carburetor and connected to a manual transmission. This Pacemaker has benefitted from a comprehensive restoration with no detail overlooked. The pale yellow paint work shows to have been professionally done; and the chrome throughout the car is in show winning condition. Also exemplifying the exterior are red painted wheels with beauty rings, center caps and whitewall tires.
Contrasting the yellow body is a dark red leather interior and a power maroon canvas convertible top. The interior wood trim is presented well, along with the chrome bezels that adorn the carefully restored instrumentation. Original accessories accompanying the car are an in-dash radio, clock and cabin heater. The original jack, lug wrench and spare tire are also included.
