The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW's air-cooled, 46-hp, 1,600-cc flat four-cylinder engine. The only instrumentation was a speedometer that housed a fuel gauge on its dial, and a glove box. The windshield folded and the detachable doors were swappable front to rear. VW boasted that the Thing's cabin could be hosed out. Naturally, America's youth loved the Thing. Sadly, it was only produced in the US for two years, from 1973 through 1974.
This VW Thing was restored a while ago, but the orange and black paint over the black interior show to be in great condition. The car features an aftermarket AM/FM radio with a cassette player that is concealed in the glovebox. The Thing is complete with records, a spare tire and a jack.
