The Buick Riviera redefined the “personal luxury” car market. Developed under the close guidance of Bill Mitchell and introduced for the 1963 model year, the Riviera remains universally recognized as a watershed of modern automotive design. The high performance Gran Sport model, released in 1965, was equipped with a 360 horsepower, 425 cubic inch displacement V-8 engine, and Buick advertised it as “An iron fist in a velvet glove.”
