For 1957 Oldsmobiles featured an all-new body and a far different look. Olds referred to its ‘57 models as “Golden Rockets,” a bit of a misnomer as the GM division was celebrating its 60th anniversary that year. Olds also introduced the industry’s first printed electronic circuit board in dashboards.

Meanwhile, Olds was setting records at NASCAR events. Lee Petty’s J-2-outfitted ’57 Olds sailed down Daytona Beach at 144.9 mph. Bill France Sr., recognizing an unfair advantage when he saw it, complained that Oldsmobile wasn’t offering the J-2 to the public . . . and he was right. Oldsmobile responded by putting the J-2 on the options list for the general public for the 1957 and 1958 model year. For a mere $83.00, you could order the hot J-2 engine option featuring triple carburetors. With a 10:1 compression, the hopped up Rocket 371-cid V-8 yielded 300-hp. Fewer than 750 1957 Oldsmobiles were so equipped making this Super 88 a rare survivor.

Mid-level Super 88’s were positioned between the 88 and top-of-the-line 98 with the Holiday designation signifying the hardtop body style. With less than 100 miles on a complete engine and transmission rebuild by noted east coast shop J.B.’s Auto Machine, Baltimore, Maryland, this Super 88 has actual miles and is ready to tour or show. The beneficiary of a ground-up restoration, the tri-tone red, black and white interior was reupholstered with original fabric and the Wonder Bar radio converted to AM-FM reception for additional enjoyment when driving.
