The fastback Barracuda was hailed as being able to easily convert from a sporty four-passenger into being a convenient transporter for surfboards, skis or other equipment for your on-the-go life. The Formula S package was available on all three of the available bodystyles; Fastback, Hardtop and Convertible. It was available with both the 340-cid and the Super Commando 383-cid V-8 engines. The 383-cid unit (as seen in this car) was for “the all-out performance devotees.” The engine had been re-engineered for 1968 with new cylinder heads and new four-barrel intake manifold that helped give the car “the kind of power you’d expect in a unique sports car” per period company writings. Heavy duty suspension, stabilizer bar, Firm-Ride shocks, unique (to this model) hood louvers and special medallion identifier are also part of the Formula S package.
This example has been restored to concours quality with a “dead-straight body, perfect doors jambs and gaps.” It features the aforementioned 383-cid V-8 engine and automatic transmission, bucket seats, folding rear seat, center console, AM radio, color-keyed steel wheels, radial redline tires, dog dish hubcaps and power brakes. This “best of the best” Formula S is reported to have exact factory specifications under the hood, including the hose clamps, hoses and plug wires. This is a desirable and rarely seen factory optional performance package that also promised being able to take the turns “with gyroscope sureness.”
