The 1953 Crestline Sunliner was honored as the Pace Car for the 37th Annual Indianapolis 500. William Clay Ford, grandson of Henry Ford, drove the actual pace car.

1953 was the first year there were more than three pace cars produced. Ford Motor Company built only one Pace Car Edition for each dealer. The pace car featured special paint and interior codes that were specific only to the Pace Car Edition. The trim and color codes can be identified with the “SS” code. All Pace cars were painted White Sungate Ivory with a Gold and White Leatherette interior and a White Orlon convertible top. The pace car also featured an Anniversary Gold Dash and top brows, crossed checkered flag emblems on the front fenders, black lettering, and the “Coronado” Continental trunk kit. Other accessories include dual mirrors, a radio, clock , heater, power steering, fender skirts and backup lights.
