In period literature, this car was officially titled as a SC/Rambler by Hurst. The name was to tell you a lot about the machine. It rumbles… a cool mellow rumble that resonates through its big dual exhausts. AMC put together a special limited-production custom based on the Rambler Rogue hardtop and called it the SC/Rambler by Hurst. It was advertised as the “greatest performance car available for under $3,000.” It was built to illustrate the engineering excellence of American Motors and the performance ingenuity of Hurst Performance Research. The model warranted its own brochure promoting its many attributes.
The tribute-based example on offer displays an excellent restoration on an original hardtop car with “all of the Scrambler equipment” onboard, including the powerful and freshly built 401-cid, 390-hp V-8 engine with high performance heads, headers, Edelbrock carburetor and a purple camshaft. This powerful unit is matched to an original equipment T-10 four-speed floor-shift manual transmission with the correct Hurst T-handle shifter and a posi-traction rear end. Power steering and brakes, AM radio, mag-style wheels painted blue, hood scoop, chrome exhaust extensions, hood tie-downs, dual custom “teardrop” racing mirrors, SC/Rambler Hurst badging and Red, White and Blue color scheme are all seen, as on the factory edition. The primarily black interior has red, white and blue trim elements on the upper seat bolsters and has been significantly upgraded with all deluxe upholstery and headliner. The car also has a steering column-mounted tachometer (in the original model it was by Sun). This car is very fast, it runs and drives beautifully and is also reported to be fun to drive.
