The Fairlane intermediate sported a completely fresh look for 1966, with stacked headlamps at the front reflecting contemporary big Fords. For the first time, Fairlane Convertible models were offered. Both the new drop-top and two-door hardtop was available with GT or GTA (automatic transmission) package, which included a specially tuned 335 horsepower 390 Ford FE big-block V-8 and other performance upgrades. The new two-door Fairlane 500 XL models also had a sporty look and were equipped with deluxe bucket-seat interiors. The XL could be ordered with a Ford six, or small- or big-block V-8. Fairlane 500 GT/GTA coupes and convertibles exude Sixties’ performance imagery, while a sporty 500 XL can be very satisfying collector car.
Perfect example of the satisfaction found in such a Ford is likely experienced in this convertible. In recent years, it has been completely refinished with fresh paint, restored engine compartment and a quality interior that can be appreciated by any collector. The fit and finish of the body panels, chrome and emblems on the exterior are on par or better than when the factory produced this convertible. A basic 289-cid V-8 provides ample motivation when matched to the manual transmission. All new black upholstery with attractive cloth inserts are found in the neatly presented passenger compartment. The modern stance given from the upsized 17-inch alloy American Racing rims give this 500 XL a bold performance look. It is a clean machine that is simple and easy to appreciate.
