It was the kind of half-mad idea that could only have come from the worldwide boom economy of the mid-1980s. Lamborghini management decided it made perfect sense to take the basic engineering of the Cheetah, a long-abandoned military prototype, and retrofit it with a luxurious wood and leather interior, a spacious cargo area, and the Countach V-12. It would then sell it to a public that had never before seen a true high-performance SUV, much less one that could run from 0–60 mph in 7.7 seconds and ford small streams and effortlessly climb mountain passes. The LM002 boasted a 76-gallon fuel tank and specially designed Pirelli Scorpion tires—a run-flat design that could also handle extreme desert heat.
It was a unique vehicle at a unique time, when the exotic car market was in full flourish thanks to a new generation of millionaires and billionaires seeking the ever-greater “toy”—and nothing was bigger or better than the LM002. They found use the world over with everyone, from military figures to Middle Eastern royalty to celebrities, who loved the “Rambo Lambo” for its immense power and presence. There has been nothing quite like it, before or since.
A total of 301 examples of the LM002 were produced between 1986 and 1993. Of that number, 48 were built to the so-called LM/American or “LM/A” specifications and delivered to the United States.
The example offered is such an LM/American with documentation on file indicating it was delivered through a Florida port of entry; the window sticker notes it was delivered at an MSRP of $158,000 (nearly $300,000 today). It recently completed a five-year mechanical and cosmetic restoration in the original color of Nero over a new black interior at a total cost exceeding $325,000. The consignor notes no aspect of the vehicle was left untouched, from its Countach V-12 engine to new exhaust and a full, new interior with Alpine stereo head unit and integrated Bluetooth. A full set of new, correct Pirelli Scorpion tires, which are costly and difficult to find, were sourced, as were the sand lip rear-mounted spare and mounted on O.Z. wheels. The LM002 also features the rare rear cargo toolbox, tonneau cover, proper LM/A floor mats, and correct LM/A chrome bumpers.
