The Shrine of the Holy Grille is devoted almost entirely to the history of two Ford Motor Company lines, the Lincoln Continental and the Edsel. It is especially fitting that Jim Popp’s collection includes a Continental Mark II, as this limited-production, hand-built, extraordinary expensive vehicle, intended to be the finest in the world regardless of cost, was constructed in a purpose-built Louisville factory. This factory would later be repurposed for the production of many Edsels.
The Shrine’s Mark II, one of just 1,769 made, is equipped with factory air conditioning, one of the very few available options, and was delivered new to Harriet W. Rumely of Wilton, Connecticut, by Eastman Greenwich Motors of Greenwich. It has been part of Mr. Popp’s collection since 1994 and is a well-preserved older restoration, in the unusual and beautiful original color scheme of Black with Deep Grey and White Scottish leather interior. Showing 31,000 actual miles at the time of cataloguing, believed to be actual mileage, it is a handsome example of a rare and significant model.
