In 1986, after a six-year absence, Porsche brought its fearsome 911 Turbo back to the North American market; that brief retirement forced by new US exhaust emissions standards. Seeing that financially-critical US market segment taken over by “Gray-market” cars, Porsche accepted the fact that it had to offer a cleaner-burning Turbo, and for the 1986 model year, a new G-program Turbo reappeared in American showrooms. Just 1,424 were sold.
The new intercooled single-turbo 3.3-liter engine now boasted Digital Motor Electronics engine management, CIS/K-Jetronic fuel injection with oxygen sensors and three-way exhaust catalysts. The rear wheels were widened by an inch to better manage the 282 bhp and 278 foot-pounds of torque. The manual transaxle remained a four-speed with limited slip. As Porsche’s top-of-the-line 911, the Turbo again offered lush leather upholstery and a broad range of standard comfort and convenience features.
This handsome, accident-free example was ordered in stunning Paint-to-sample Burgundy Metallic paint (Code L999) with a complimentary interior in tan, brown, black, and burgundy. It was fitted with factory sport seats, an electric sunroof, rear wiper, headlamp washers, automatic climate control, electrically-adjustable seats and mirrors, and a security system. Accompanying documents indicate that it first sold to Mr. Richard Quan of southern California on October 1, 1985, and delivered at the factory where a Touring Pass was issued. It then passed through owners in Georgia, Florida, and Pennsylvania before being exported to Germany in August of 2019 with a mileage reading of about 42,000 miles. A TUV certificate for personal use was issued on April 11, 2020.
The car is fitted with a stainless-steel aftermarket exhaust and an entertainment system. Air-cooled Turbos are highly sought-after, and this one is extremely attractive and well-cared-for, showing just over 43,000 miles at the time of cataloguing.
