BMW and its M division gave birth to a legend by slotting a modified, 3.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine sourced from the M1 into their beautifully styled 6-series coupe. The new powertrain was good for 256 horsepower when paired to the matching five-speed manual transmission. Dubbed the M6, this sat at the top of the pecking order of the BMW range and proved to be a tremendous success for the company.
At its time, the M6 was the second-fastest BMW ever built behind the M1, topping out at over 250 km/h. Along with its stunning performance, the M6 was outfitted with all the luxurious accoutrements to which BMW’s customers had become accustomed to, making it the perfect car for extended road trips, crossing continents in leaps and bounds at high speed.
This 1988 Cinnabar Red chassis offered from the Pacific Coast Highway Collection is one of 1,767 US-market examples produced between 1987 and 1989. Featuring handsome Natural leather upholstery, it is also desirably equipped with a factory power sunroof, Nakamichi head unit, power seats, and BBS TRX RS wheels; an aftermarket pair of JL Audio four-channel amplifiers reside in the car’s trunk. M6 coupes produced for the 1988 model year are further specified with one-year-only features for the rear occupants, namely a separate climate control unit, air bags, and knee bolsters. It has recently received a thorough suite of new components provided for the five-speed manual transmission, including a new shift lever, shift rod joints, bushings, and fluid flush.
This attractive and desirably equipped US-market M6 is accompanied with its original tool kit.
