Many casual enthusiasts are unaware that a Bentley-badged version of the famed Rolls-Royce Corniche was ever produced, but indeed it was, under the heralded name of Continental, in the same four generations as the Corniche sibling. While over 5,000 Corniches were built, total production of the Continental was only 574 cars over two decades, a remarkably small number. Accordingly, they are considered more desirable and valuable by today’s enthusiasts, especially the late-production Series III cars that received all of the important chassis engineering updates developed for the model over the course of production.
The factory left-hand-drive Continental III offered here was ordered by its original California owner in an especially stunning and dramatic livery, Vermillion over Cerise leather interior, with a Parchment convertible top. Additional features included matching special-order carpet and polished radiator shell with painted vanes. Delivered new in Newport Beach, the Continental remained with the first owner until recently, and its very nicely maintained condition is documented by an impressive history file, extending through services and maintenance, all the way back to the original window sticker, as well as the manuals and warranty documents. Recent work on the car included new front brakes, four new tires, and recent re-chrome of each wheel. It remains in impressive overall condition and recorded 83,981 miles at the time of cataloguing.
This is a lovely example of that great rarity: the modern Bentley Continental.
