Daimler-Benz had purchased the Maybach brand in 1960, initially producing special-edition variants of its existing saloons. But, to rival the incoming Rolls-Royce Phantom VII, a new limousine based on the S-Class of the time was introduced at the turn of the 21st Century.

This extended-wheelbase 62 S model was ordered new to the United States, finished in Baltic Black over a Black and Anthracite Exclusive leather interior featuring Piano lacquer wood trim. As a higher-powered S version, it wafts under the steam of a 500-cc larger twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V-12 sourced from AMG. Delivered through a five-speed automatic transmission, it develops a considerable 604 horsepower. But, as with any Maybach, it’s not what’s under the bonnet that truly counts. Instead, it’s the incredibly luxurious interior.

Most notably, this car was configured with three standout elements. Firstly, a partition wall that incorporates a clear glass screen and curtain to separate passengers from their driver. In addition, the panoramic sliding glass sunroof and an external communication system that allows occupants to converse with those outside via a microphone and loudspeaker. The rear cabin also features a refrigerator, climate control, folding tables, and vanity mirrors. Other specification highlights include rear-axle steering, a rearview camera, integrated mobile phone and satellite navigation, a heated steering wheel, and bi-xenon headlights.

Completed in late February 2008, the Maybach was delivered to its first owner by Mercedes-Benz of Westminster in Colorado in April. As detailed in a clean CARFAX report, the car was offered for sale in New York in February 2017. It is believed to have been exported shortly after, for the accompanying Manufacturer Declaration of Conformity provided by Mercedes-Benz Belgium Luxembourg of Brussels is dated to November 2017.

Having most recently resided as part of The Willy Michiels Collection, the 62 S is complemented by its owner’s guides in their leather folio, a spare wheel, and two Maybach-branded headsets. Sparingly driven throughout its life, the car displayed a modest 8,132 miles on its odometer at the time of cataloguing.

Please note, most of the vehicles in The Willy Michiels Collection have been retained on static display for many years. As such, some cars and motorcycles will require mechanical servicing to be made roadworthy. As part of this estate sale, the vehicles are offered in their condition as found, and wherever possible RM Sotheby's encourages prospective buyers to inspect any lots prior to bidding. Please contact an RM Sotheby's Car Specialist for the condition of specific lots or with any further questions.
