  • Mercedes-Benz’s ultra-luxury limousine intended to rival Rolls-Royce and Bentley

Following the acquisition of Rolls-Royce Motors Cars by BMW and the Volkswagen Group taking over Bentley, Daimler relaunched Maybach as a standalone marque at the start of the 21st Century to gain a foothold in the ultra-luxury segment of the automotive market. The resulting S-Class-based limousines were fit for business tycoons and heads of state.

An example of the extended-wheelbase Maybach 62, this car is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V-12 engine that produces an impressive 542 horsepower and, perhaps more importantly in this application, 664 pound-feet of torque. Delivered new to the United States in February 2004, it was sophisticatedly specified with Caspian Black Metallic paintwork over a Beige Exclusive leather interior featuring Fjord Brown ash tree wood trim.

While the chauffeur could turn to such amenities as a heated steering wheel, proximity-controlled cruise control, parking sensors, adaptive suspension, and automatic climate control, the 62 is best enjoyed from the rear seats. They go beyond replicating the first-class airline experience; instead, they better replicate the sensation of flying aboard a private jet—something that Maybach buyers were most likely accustomed to.

Rear door and window curtains provide privacy, while an in-built mobile phone and folding tables offer a place to work on the move, with any successful deal toasted by a bottle of champagne that might be chilled in the onboard refrigerator. Arguably the statement feature is the panoramic sliding roof, which alone added more than $11,000 to the already-considerable list price of $430,00.

Although the definitive ownership history of this Maybach 62 is not fully known, a previous Washington state title is dated to July 2012. It records a sale to Ferrari of Orange County, at which time the car was noted to have covered 46,195 miles (approximately 74,344 kilometres).

Having since relocated to Belgium to join The Willy Michiels Collection, the Maybach is accompanied by its owner’s guides in their leather folio plus a spare wheel. It displayed 92,562 kilometres on the digital odometer at the time of cataloguing.

Please note, most of the vehicles in The Willy Michiels Collection have been retained on static display for many years. As such, some cars and motorcycles will require mechanical servicing to be made roadworthy. As part of this estate sale, the vehicles are offered in their condition as found, and wherever possible RM Sotheby's encourages prospective buyers to inspect any lots prior to bidding. Please contact an RM Sotheby's Car Specialist for the condition of specific lots or with any further questions.
