Completed in September 1987, this Grand Prix White (P5) 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport is believed to be one of just 340 examples produced. Beyond the considerable rarity, this model represents the rawest 911 since the 1973 Carrera RS through the removal of as much equipment and as many features as possible to decrease weight and increase performance. This program resulted in the exclusion of fog lamps, headlight washers, sound deadening, and a rear window wiper. Additionally, less underbody sealant was sprayed, and the interior lacked creature comforts like power windows, rear seats, central locking, and air conditioning. Even the passenger sun visor was removed to save precious grams.
Revisions were also made to the engine, which featured some lightweight internals and a higher redline of 6,850 rpm. This unit was placed on stiffer mounts and mated to a gearbox with revised upper gear ratios and a short-throw shifter. Lastly, 16-inch forged wheels, Bilstein dampers, and a limited-slip differential complete the handling modifications.
As shown on the original window sticker on file, this Club Sport was sold new through a dealership in Lakewood, Colorado. An original warranty and maintenance booklet further confirms, through the presence of stamps, that this dealer performed the delivery inspection and initial service. Today, just 5,928 miles show on the odometer at the time of cataloguing and the car presents in very original condition. Paint meter readings across the body indicate a high level of consistency, and the interior shows with little wear. In 2015, the Club Sport was acquired by the White Collection, and it has been started at monthly intervals to ensure proper function of the mechanical systems. Owner’s manuals, tools, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the original window sticker, and a document binder will accompany the car upon purchase.
The Club Sport is one of rarest and most special of the G-series 911s—a machine so much greater than the sum of its parts, and a true driver’s car in every sense. This example, which is offered with limited mileage and retaining its matching-numbers engine and gearbox, would make a fine addition to any Porsche collection.
