Named for the swift and enduring Méhari dromedary camel, the Citroën Méhari is among the most idiosyncratic and charming expressions of post-war French automotive design. Conceived as a lightweight utility vehicle on the venerable 2CV chassis, it combined Citroën’s renowned mechanical simplicity with an entirely novel approach to form and material. The body, crafted from corrosion-proof ABS plastic, was both practical and playful—easily hosed clean after a day on the beach or traversing rural terrain.
Powered by the dependable 602-cubic-centimeter air-cooled twin-cylinder engine, the Méhari offered modest performance but exceptional character. Its supple suspension and featherlight weight endowed it with surprising agility over uneven ground, while the later four-wheel-drive version, introduced in 1979, enhanced its off-road capability. Removable doors, a fold-flat windscreen, and a simple canvas roof allowed the Méhari to transform from utilitarian runabout to open-air leisure vehicle in moments, perfectly suited to both rural France and the sun-drenched Riviera.
Produced until 1987, the Méhari appealed to those who prized lightness of spirit and a sense of adventure over conventional refinement. Brightly colored and minimalist in design, it has become emblematic of a carefree era of motoring.
The Méhari on offer is delightful to behold, reportedly restored by the renowned 2CV Méhari Club Cassis, Citroën specialists based on the French Riviera. Finished in Beige Hoggar, named for the sun-baked Hoggar Mountains of Southern Algeria, the car exudes a distinctly Mediterranean charm, while nautical-inspired details, including striped terrycloth fabric upholstery and warm wood paneling, reflect its playful spirit.
Cheerful, versatile, and unmistakably French, it would make a fine addition to any collection of classic French automobiles, or the perfect companion for relaxed summer motoring along the coast.
