By 1957, Packard was down to one series, the Studebaker President-based Clipper. Featuring a 116.5-inch wheelbase, the Clipper included many standard comfort and convenience features and just two body styles – the four-door Town Sedan and four-door Country Sedan station wagon. The only engine choice was a McCulloch-supercharged 289-cubic inch Studebaker V-8, with the blower specifically designed to provide boost pressure above 3,000 rpm. This innovative engine provided 275 bhp and capably powered the 3,650-pound Country Sedan. Despite their desirability, just 4,809 Clippers were produced for 1957, including 869 Country Sedans.

The current owner acquired this example in August 2009 from another active collector, who himself acquired it in mid-2008 from Art Astor of California. The car was cosmetically restored in Mr. Astor’s ownership with the majority of the chrome and brightwork refinished. The bodywork is excellent throughout, and the interior features gold leather upholstery with black and white cloth inserts, complemented by gold carpeting – a bold but very appropriate combination. The unique dash was partially restored, and the gold dash pad was replaced prior to its 2008 sale. Factory options include power steering, power brakes and a power driver’s seat, plus a radio, clock, heater and defroster. Accessory boost and oil pressure monitor the powerful supercharged V-8 engine, while a roof rack, dual radio antennas and wide whitewall tires with refinished wheel discs complete the exterior. Driven sparingly since 2008, this very rare Country Sedan is both rare and nicely presented. It is a fresh alternative to the far more common Chevrolets and Fords of the 1950s.
