Based in Huntington Beach, California, Gunther Werks have established themselves as true artisans in the field of building customized Porsche 911s. Using the air-cooled 993-generation 911 as its basis, the company ‘remasters’ these cars into what they believe Porsche would be building today, should 993-production have continued uninterrupted since 1998.
Carbon fiber is utilized throughout, even with Gunther Werks superbly weaving it into the chassis, alongside bespoke carbon fiber bodywork. Underpinning this carbon fiber exoskeleton, Gunther Werks has developed a formidable suspension setup which combines bespoke DGR computer-controlled active coil over suspension, custom suspension arms with revised geometry, uprated anti-roll bars, lightweight uprights, a front strut brace, and a cutting-edge hydraulic front lift system.
Taking Porsche’s original 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat six-cylinder engine out of the car, these are shipped to Rothsport Road and Race in Sherwood, Oregon where the engines are stripped down and rebuilt to 4.0-liters of displacement. No moving parts are left untouched in creating a truly extraordinary engine, with an extensive list of forged internals and race-specification equipment. This includes fitting a two-stage MoTec engine management system, individual throttle bodies, Mahle pistons, and coil-over-plug ignition, along with a billet crankshaft, rods, and barrels. The engine is said to produce north of 430 horsepower while generating over 330 pound-feet of torque, all managed through the 993’s Getrag G50 six-speed transaxle, reinforced with stronger internals, a single mass mid-weight flywheel, and uprated single-plate clutch.
In giving their 911 the Speedster treatment, Gunther Werks claim that their extensive use of modern carbon fiber integration techniques results in a convertible chassis twice as stiff as the standard coupe, despite removing its roof, but with no added weight penalty. Furthermore, it is claimed that the Speedsters are stronger, lighter, and therefore should be faster than their close counterparts.
Using a 993-generation 911 Cabriolet as its basis, Gunther Werks’ strengthening process for the Speedster begins with adding the same revamped carbon components as the coupes but with additional enhancements, namely via upgrades to the space previously occupied by the rear seats. These measures, including a carbon fiber windshield frame and cowl with aluminum reinforcements, along with a new roll cage and roll hoop seamlessly integrated as support for the tonneau cover, not only enhance occupant safety but contribute to further strengthening the chassis.
Gunther Werks have limited production on the Speedster to just twenty-five examples, and on offer here is a rare right-hand-drive example, built for a customer in Hong Kong. Never having been road registered since its arrival in Hong Kong, this Speedster remains undriven since completion with the exception of factory testing prior to delivery. It is finished in two-stage Tungsten Metallic paintwork, beautifully offset by the interior trimmed in two-tone Brandy and Onyx Nappa leather. Furthermore, the interior boasts the optional Travel Package, including a multi-function carbon fiber steering wheel, and a one-piece carbon center console complete with a cupholder and phone holder. The Speedster is also equipped with nickel-plated bullet-style side mirrors, harkening back to vintage 356 Speedsters in style.
Tastefully specified and presented in virtually as-new condition throughout, this is an exciting opportunity to acquire a Gunther Werks Speedster, which Gunther Werks have now sold the entire production run. Taking the 993 into the 21st century, the Gunther Werks Speedster combines outlandish performance with the thrill of open-air driving with a truly unique personality.
