Stately, sophisticated, and practical enough to be used on a regular basis, Mercedes-Benzes’ venerable 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet bears all the hallmarks of a truly fantastic classic car. Its exceptional engineering delivers superb performance on the road, making it a go-to choice for those looking for classic charm with outstanding usability. Both in period and today, it is a car that attracts those looking to exude an understated elegance, and it comes as no surprise that a handful of celebrities have had a 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet of their own, including Ralph Lauren, Cher, Roy Orbison, and the previous owners of this car: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

Purchased by the consignor from Hanks and Wilson in 2014, the current owner decided that the car should be restored to its original specifications. The car was stripped back to bare metal and finished in its original colour of Tobacco Brown (DB 410). Likewise, the interior was fully retrimmed in Cognac leather to its original configuration. The car’s wood trim was carefully restored and refinished alongside refinishing of all interior and exterior brightwork. According to the consignor, the same level of attention to detail was lavished on the car’s mechanical systems to make sure it would drive as good as it looked, including fully servicing the cars suspension and braking system, along with replacing any perished rubber bushings and components.

Since the current owner’s purchase, the car has been driven just over 700 miles and as such presents in wonderful condition throughout. A-list celebrity provenance only adds to this car’s allure, and it will be sure to please wherever it goes.
