It is said that from all of Porsche’s 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring production, only sixty-two cars were finished in black, with only a handful of those being right hand drive. This particular example as delivered new to Hong Kong, one of only five 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring delivered to the city and the only one in this colour scheme, in June of 1973. It was fabulously equipped from new, with red lettering to offset its black paintwork, driver’s side outside mirror, power windows, electric sunroof, sport seats, and a limited slip differential. A ‘Touring’ in the truest sense, here was a Carrera RS 2.7 Touring equipped with all possible creature comforts on top of what was considered to be one of the finest sports cars of the day

The Carrera RS 2.7 was eventually sold to Japan before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1980s. As had happened to many pre-1973 911s at the time, the car was modified cosmetically to look like a later 911 (in the case of this car a slant-nose, turbo look), yet the car retained its identity throughout.

Purchased by Dave Buhain of Los Angeles in 2001, he was able to confirm through Porsche’s archive the car’s true identity as a RS 2.7, verifying its production number under the dash, and thus embarked on a restoration in 2004 to return the car to its as-delivered state, using several unrestored Carrera RS 2.7 Tourings for reference along the way. All original RS 2.7 parts that remained with the car were retained and when parts needed to be sourced, only new old stock components were used. At this point a correct 2.7-litre engine case was sourced to be fitted to the car, as the original had been lost. Alongside this, where required, a number of genuine RS 2.7 body panels were sourced. Following completion of the restoration in 2007, the car was shown at Rennsport Reunion IV in October 2011.

A resident of the U.K. for the last twelve years, this 2.7 RS has received further significant mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment from the marque specialists at BS Motorsports in Buckinghamshire from 2018 to 2019. Under their care, the car received a bare metal repaint and realignment of the front wings and the replacement of both the oil and fuel tanks. The chassis was placed onto a jig to ensure all body panels would be aligned for a factory-correct fit of all panels. When completed, this work totaled to over £65,000 and invoices are available in the car’s history file. Most recently, the car was entrusted to Canford Classics where it was fitted with correct rear seats, and four correct 1973-dated Fuchs wheels with four new tyres.

Undoubtedly the most iconic model from Porsche’s first generation of 911, it is the Carrera RS 2.7 that Porsche looked to for inspiration of all its water-cooled GT-models which are now so incredibly desirable. A true blue-chip collectable, any Porsche collection is incomplete without a Carrera RS 2.7. This example would be a fabulous driver’s car, equipped with all the right amenities for long-distance touring, and a seldom-seen colour only adds to its charm.
