In the late eighties, SCCA GT racing embodied a raw, inventive spirit. Purpose-built, tube-frame machines loosely resembling their production counterparts competed across several classes defined by engine displacement and weight. At the top end, thunderous Camaros and Corvettes dominated the GT-1 class, while lighter, more agile machines from Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and MG competed in GT-4 and GT-5 classes.

These cars were true expressions of creative grassroots engineering, often crafted in home garages and small workshops across the country. With most competitors relying on intuition and trial and error, the paddocks at Lime Rock Park and Watkins Glen International were abuzz with drivers swapping parts and sharing advice in pursuit of glory at the SCCA Runoffs.

It was in this spirit that the Alfa Romeo-inspired GT-5 racer offered here was built in the 1980s, possibly by veteran SCCA racer Randy Zimmer, known to have constructed several such vehicles and to whom an accompanying SCCA logbook was issued on 26 July 1989. Styled after Alfa Romeo’s legendary Giulia GTA 1300 Junior, the car shares little more than a steel roof panel with its Italian muse.

Beneath the lightweight fiberglass bodywork is a custom tube-frame chassis and a tuned 1.3-liter Alfa Romeo inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and a racing transmission with bell housing. Other competition features include a racing shifter, roll cage, gauge cluster, Lexan windshield, and a fuel cell. Several accompanying SCCA logbooks document participation in regional and national events from 1989 to 2000 at Lime Rock, Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Sebring, and other circuits.
