The mid-1990s witnessed unprecedented manufacturer interest in touring car racing, with the German-based DTM offering the fastest, most spectacular, and most technically advanced racing of its kind. Factory-backed, multi-car teams from Alfa Romeo, Opel, and Mercedes-Benz attracted the likes of ex-Formula 1 drivers Alessandro Nannini, Keke Rosberg, and Bernd Schneider, while a new-for-1995 expanded calendar dovetailed seven domestic DTM “double-header” rounds with a further five ITC events of similar format.
Having won both Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in 1992 and 1994, Mercedes-Benz extended its factory-backed entry for 1995 to eight cars: four for the primary AMG-Mercedes squad, four for the Zakspeed team. This car, chassis number RS95-0216, was prepared by the former, and was entrusted to DTM frontrunner Jörg van Ommen for the season’s duration.
The campaign started positively, with two 2nd places in the season’s opening DTM round at Hockenheim and a 7th in the inaugural ITC race at Mugello. Further 3rd places at Norisring and Diepholz bookended the Donington Park ITC round, which yielded 4th and 3rd. The driver placed 6th at Estoril, followed by double DTM points-paying finishes at Nürburgring and Singen. The season concluded with further 3rd places at Magny-Cours and in the final DTM race at Hockenheim. The season had proved a dominant one for Mercedes-Benz; its cars claimed 1-2-3 in both the DTM and ITC final standings. Superb consistency ensured that van Ommen finished as runner-up to “dual” champion Bernd Schneider in the former, and 5th in the latter.
Following an abortive single entry for the 1996 ITC, chassis RS95-0216 was then retired from service and thereafter displayed at the Wilhelm Maybach Technical School in Stuttgart until 2014. It was subsequently acquired by DTM enthusiast Jörg Hatscher, who entrusted it to marque specialist Thorsten Stadler for restoration. Since completion, the C-Klasse has competed in a handful of DTM revival events in the hands of former DTM driver Patrick Huisman and van Ommen himself. Immaculately presented in its correct 1995-specification UPS/Tabac/Sonax livery, this spectacular ex-Works Mercedes-Benz is a prime contender for future entry to the ever-popular DTM revival and young-timer events for which it is eligible.
