Just 242 examples of the Maserati 3500 GT Spyder were completed between 1959 and 1964, with coachbuilder Vignale tasked with styling the model’s transformation from coupé to convertible. Per a copy of the factory build sheet and no fewer than three accompanying Maserati-issued certificates, chassis number 1453 offered here was built as a GTi model featuring Lucas fuel injection. Completed in April 1963, it was specified with Nero paintwork over a Champagne leather interior and equipped with Borrani wire wheels.
Delivered via famed Italian dealer Franco Cornacchia, the Spyder was purchased new in Rome by serial Maserati owner Gioacchino Lauro—the first son of entrepreneur, SSC Napoli football club president, and parliamentarian Achille Lauro. The car remained in Italy until the mid-1970s, prior to being exported to the United States. After ownership by Frank Mandarano in Seattle, a state title on file shows Californian residency from 2009.
The 3500 GTi Spyder returned to Europe circa 2012 before being acquired by the vendor in February 2019. Please note: the Maserati has, reportedly in the 1990s, been converted to run on three Weber carburettors but notably presents in its factory colour combination.
