Bugatti has produced no small number of incredible automobiles over its illustrious history; among these, its most charming creation is also its smallest. In the late 1920s, Ettore Bugatti constructed a half-size, electric-powered version of the Type 35 for his young son, Roland. It proved to be such a sensation that approximately 500 production versions were built for use by the children of wealthy Bugatti clientele, as well as resorts and even a zoo. In-period, the cars were even raced!
Interestingly, Bugatti’s official name for this little car was simply “Baby,” with “Type 52” a latter, unofficial designation. But make no mistake: These were very much real Bugattis in miniature, and surviving examples are eagerly collected by enthusiasts of the marque.
For those looking for a Baby that they (or their children) can actually enjoy, high-quality replicas such as this offer an enticing alternative. Like the originals, it is powered by an electric motor, and it wears detailed bodywork—and even alloy wheels—that make it immediately recognizable as having been inspired by the famed Type 35. This example is finished in classic French Racing Blue over a red interior, with an engine-turned dashboard fronted by a wood-rimmed steering wheel. Leather hood straps and a side-mounted spare complete the race-ready appearance.
