When Ferrari reintroduced front-engined grand touring to its lineup with the Pininfarina-designed 550 Maranello in 1996, demand soon followed for an open-top variant. While the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina offered a thrilling, limited-run solution, its rudimentary roof made it impractical for anything beyond fair-weather drives. Seeking to offer a more usable convertible experience for the successor 575M Maranello, Ferrari introduced the innovative “Revocromico” rotating hardtop in the 2005 Superamerica.
This groundbreaking roof system featured a carbon fiber frame integrated with electrochromic glass, the first application of such technology in a production car. With a dial in the cabin, occupants could adjust the roof’s opacity from near full transparency to just one percent of available light, effectively controlling cabin brightness. At the press of a button, the entire roof panel rotated rearward to rest flush with the trunk lid in just 10 seconds, while the rear glass remained upright to serve as a wind deflector. Limited to just 559 units, the Superamerica sold out within weeks of its debut.
Beneath its sculpted hood, the Superamerica housed an upgraded version of Ferrari’s 5.7-liter V-12, featuring improved intake flow and reduced exhaust back pressure. This refined engine delivered 532 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 434 pound-feet of torque at 5,250 rpm. Buyers could choose between a traditional gated six-speed manual or Ferrari’s F1-style six-speed paddle-shift transmission, making the Superamerica a compelling blend of cutting-edge innovation, classic GT proportions, and pure twelve-cylinder performance. Of the 559 Superamericas constructed, fewer than 200 were said to be destined for North American clients, such as the example offered here.
Delivered new to the Ming Collection via Ferrari of San Francisco, this highly desirable US-specification Superamerica remains in essentially “as-delivered” condition, with a window sticker still affixed to its glass and displaying an astonishing 120 miles at the time of cataloguing.
Finished in the quintessential Rosso Corsa over Beige Connolly leather, this superbly optioned example features Scuderia Ferrari fender shields, carbon fiber interior trim, and racing seats, complemented by extensive additional Connolly leather upholstery, most notably on the rear bulkhead, parcel shelf, center tray, and fire extinguisher cover, all tastefully contrasted by Rosso stitching. Further luxuries include a Handly fire extinguisher, satellite navigation, and a high-power hi-fi stereo system with a six-disc CD changer. Most notably, this example is equipped with the coveted GTC Performance Package, a $21,837 factory option that includes carbon-ceramic brakes, sport-tuned suspension, a free-flowing exhaust system, and distinctive modular 19-inch wheels.
Since its delivery to the Ming Collection in September 2005, the car has never left the facility or been exposed to public roads, remaining obsessively maintained within the collection’s private workshop with Ferrari dispatching factory-certified technicians equipped with proprietary tools and diagnostic systems to perform all required maintenance on site. This work included a comprehensive $12,640 service performed in October 2023 which featured new coolant, clutch, brake, gearbox, and engine fluids, as well as new filters, drive belts, timing belts, and tensioners. In addition to its factory-affixed window sticker and service records, the car is accompanied by a host of accessories still in their factory packaging including Schedoni luggage, custom Keith Collins floor mats, tool kit, and owner’s manuals.
Already recognized as a collectable modern classic, the 575 Superamerica embodies Ferrari’s open-top V-12 heritage with stunning design, thrilling performance, and grand touring comfort. Outfitted with the rare GTC package and presented in the marque’s most iconic color scheme, this ultra-low-mileage example stands as one of the most sought-after iterations of this celebrated model.
