Penned by Filippo Sapino of Pininfarina, the Ferrari 365 GTC/4’s flowing wedge shape was a significant departure from the more traditional profile of its predecessors when it debuted at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. Proportioned like a two-seater coupe while cleverly incorporating fold-down rear seats, the GTC/4 effectively replaced two models, the 365 GTC and 365 GT 2+2. Both in design and performance, the 365 GTC/4 was more subdued and luxurious than the aggressive 365 GTB/4, its two-seater contemporary built on the same chassis. Ferrari produced approximately 500 examples over 18 months, the bulk of which were sold in the United States.
After completion in August 1972, this 365 GTC/4, chassis 15883, was imported to the United States for distribution through William Harrah’s Ferrari distributorship, Modern Classic Motors in Reno, Nevada. It was finished as it presents today in Grigio Argento (2.443.048) over a unique Nero Cogolo (Panno 22) tartan cloth trim and optioned with power windows, air conditioning, and heated windscreen.
Following its arrival on the West Coast, 15883 was reportedly sent to Chic Vandagriff’s Hollywood Sport Cars in Hollywood, California where it found its first owner later that year. That lucky caretaker cherished 15883 for the better part of the next 30 years before parting ways in 2002. The car then passed through a series of owners and dealers before coming under the consignor’s care. Now showing 30,584 miles, 15883 is accompanied by a jacking kit and history report from Ferrari historian Marcel Massini.
Savored by a short list of conscientious owners, with 30,584 miles indicated at cataloguing, this splendid 365 GTC/4 offers an ideal choice for the Ferrari enthusiast seeking an unrestored grand tourer to be driven and enjoyed.
