Popper & Co. (Leipzig, Germany)

Popper & Co., of Leipzig, produced many different styles of fine-quality orchestrions, both with and without keyboards. This "Welt-Piano X Luxus 6" (with the name "Luxus" meaning magnificence or luxury in German) is a beautiful tall keyboard-style orchestrion with beveled mirrors, hanging lamps, a brightly illuminated animated painting and a window providing a view of the xylophone. It is the only example known to exist. Instrumentation includes piano with expression and mandolin attachment, xylophone, bells and drums.

It was formerly in the Fischer Collection of Germany, from where it was acquired in 1997. A selective mechanical restoration was conducted by Musikwerkstatt Monschau in 1999 to bring it to good playing condition. This Popper orchestrion is accompanied by about 80 rolls and an original period advertisement, printed in German. 63x102x36 inches.
