Considered a spiritual successor to the legendary 300 SL Gullwing, and following on from the SLR McLaren that ceased production earlier that year, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG had a lot to live up to as the supercar was launched at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The sleek coupé was the first car developed entirely in-house by AMG, following its acquisition by Mercedes-Benz in 2005.
The motoring world was not disappointed, as the SLS AMG was greeted with universal acclaim, showcasing impeccable credentials that ensured it would become a worthy addition to the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. With a sweeping long bonnet and iconic “gullwing” doors, the design was suitably dramatic, while the combination of lightweight construction and a hand-crafted, front-mid-mounted 563 brake horsepower 6.2-litre V-8 engine guaranteed blistering performance.
But it was in 2013 that the pinnacle of the range was to appear in the form of the awe-inspiring SLS AMG Black Series Coupé, an even more focused model created to compete directly with extreme supercars such as the Ferrari F12tdf.
Delivered to its first owner in Switzerland in October 2013, this Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series Coupé has covered just 4,034 kilometres from new. The car had covered around 3,700 kilometres with its first owner followed by the rest under the care of its consignor, also based in Switzerland, who acquired the Mercedes-Benz in October 2022. The car’s comprehensive maintenance record shows servicing performed at Mercedes-Benz dealerships in Switzerland from new, culminating in the most recent service performed by the main dealer’s Schlieren site in February 2024.
The SLS AMG Black Series Coupé stands out in its striking Designo Mystic White exterior finish—preserved by XPEL paint protection film applied all over, including the door sills—yet is all-the-more noticeable thanks to the deliberate omission of the AMG Aerodynamics Package, leaving the supercar without the typical carbon fibre rear wing. This choice preserves the vehicle's sleek, traditional silhouette that echoes the timeless beauty and elegance of its forebear, the iconic 300 SL Gullwing. Like its 1950s ancestor, renowned for its distinctive “gullwing” doors and celebrated status as a hallmark of automotive design, this SLS AMG Black Series Coupé blends the same aesthetic purity with technological advancement.
Under the hood, the handcrafted 6.2-litre V-8 engine pays homage to the brand's rich tradition of creating powerful engines that deliver exhilarating performance. This formidable powerplant generates an astonishing 631 horsepower (464 kW) and 635 Nm of torque, enabling the SLS AMG Black Series to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of around 315 km/h. This engine, a pinnacle of modern automotive engineering, not only forges a visual and spiritual connection with Mercedes-Benz's illustrious predecessors, but also represents the zenith of performance capabilities for which the brand is celebrated.
For automotive enthusiasts and historians, this SLS AMG Black Series Coupé represents a unique opportunity to own a piece of Mercedes-Benz history that seamlessly connects the past with the present. Its unique configuration, reminiscent of the 300 SL Gullwing, along with its handcrafted engine, positions it as a modern classic car of exceptional value and distinction. This vehicle is not just a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s legacy of luxury and performance, but also a cherished heirloom that carries forward the spirit of innovation and excellence that the brand is celebrated for.
