217 bhp, 3,164 cc SOHC air-cooled aluminium horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with DME Motronic 2 electronic fuel injection, five-speed manual transaxle, independent front suspension with MacPherson struts, lower A-arms, torsion bars, and an anti-roll bar, independent rear suspension with semi-trailing arms, transverse torsion bars, and an anti-roll bar, and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with four-piston aluminium callipers. Wheelbase: 2,273 mm

Based on the Porsche 911 SC Cabriolet, the limited-production Speedster recalled the minimalist 356 of the 1950s that has become an icon of the sports car world. Just 2,104 Speedsters were built for the 1989 model year; with a few exceptions, they wore wide “Turbo-look” bodywork. All were fitted with a thin “emergency” cloth roof that attached to a cut-down windscreen à la its 356 predecessor. Rear seats were deleted, making the new Speedster a true two-seater, with the rear storage area covered by a twin-humped fiberglass tonneau. The factory had hoped that these minimalist Speedsters would be raced, but most were quickly snapped up by collectors.

Of the limited production, only 139 right-hand drive Speedsters were built, and this example is one of just 64 allotted to Porsche Cars Great Britain. Delivered to its first owner, Michael Flannery, by Maltin Car Concessionaires in Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom, on 8 June 1989, this stunning Speedster is finished in Grand Prix White with colour-matched Fuchs light-alloy spoked wheels, a Linen leather interior, and a black hood. The thick Linen carpeting compliments the black-piped leather seats. Even the shift knob is of matching leather. Nigel Graham, Hugh Doherty, and the consignor are noted as subsequent owners.

Shown extensively by its several owners at various Porsche Club of Great Britain and other Concours d’Elegance from 1991 through 2005, this matching-numbers Speedster proved to be a consistent award winner, scoring fifteen 1st places and eighteen 2nd places and often claiming People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice awards. It has been featured in over a dozen enthusiast magazines and was the cover car for 911 and Porsche World’s winter 1991 issue. It was also featured on the cover of Porsche Post magazine in September 2002 and December 2005.

Fitted with tinted glass, a Blaupunkt Toronto SQR46 multi-speaker stereo system with an uprated amplifier, electrically adjustable sport seats, fog lights integrated into the front valance, and a velour-lined trunk compartment, the car has been properly maintained from new by marque specialists, as attested by its warranty and service stamps. The car carries 20 tax discs and 17 MOT inspection certificates.

Having recorded a remarkably low 26,300 miles at the time of cataloguing, it presents in virtually as-new condition and is ready for show or highway touring. It is supplied with all of its original documentation and manuals, including the rare Speedster supplement, concours entry forms and scoring sheets, and correspondence between the first owner and Porsche Cars Great Britain. Included are two sets of keys; a pristine tool roll, including a tire pressure gauge; its original collapsible spare tire; a jack; and a correct air compressor.

The Porsche enthusiast seeking the very best 911 Speedster need look no further.
