Despite being visually similar to the outgoing Testarossa, the new-for-1991 Ferrari 512 TR’s Pininfarina body softened the angular lines of the outgoing model. However, the most significant changes were beneath the skin and demonstrate that the 512 TR was far more than a facelift.

Looking to compete with Lamborghini’s new Diablo, the 512 TR’s chassis incorporates a one-piece rear sub-frame that allows the engine to sit an inch lower than in the Testarossa, adjusting its centre of gravity and offering improved road holding when complemented by the improved suspension geometry. The addition of a Bosch engine management system, larger intake valves and a revised exhaust, among other elements, raised peak output to 428 bhp. Top speed was increased to 314 kph, just shy of the F40’s incredible 325 kph, though at a fraction of the price. Legendary racing driver Phil Hill wrote in Road & Track, “Lurking under that bodywork is about three-quarters of an F40 with all the conveniences of any modern GT.”

Ferrari engineers focused on increasing the car’s overall drivability by installing quicker steering, a single-plate clutch coupled with a smoother gearbox, and larger cross-drilled disc brakes. Additional changes ascribed to this philosophy include a more ergonomic and comfortably-appointed cabin, complete with redesigned seats and improved sightlines.

According to its original service booklet, this Rosso Corsa over tan leather equipped Testarossa was built for the 1992 model year. Completed in October of 1992 and designated for the Swiss market, this chassis was delivered new to Mr. Walter Thomo in Épalinges, Switzerland on January 18, 1993 and road registered shortly thereafter. Registered in Switzerland since new and acquired by the consignor in 2015, this 512 TR has benefitted from requisite mechanical servicing at regular intervals from marque workshops in Switzerland and Monaco. Now presented showing just under 41,500 kilometers, this eminently presentable ‘red head’ is accompanied by its original manuals, literature, tool kit, and service documentation.
