The original Maserati Ghibli was given a mid-life refresh in 1969, when the company from Modena introduced the Ghibli SS—bringing with it an uprated 4.9-litre V-8 engine. This larger powerplant offered more power compared to earlier iterations of the stylish Italian coupe; this, coupled with the Ghibli SS’ rarity, makes the model especially coveted by enthusiasts today. Ultimately, the Maserati factory in Modena would build 1,204 Ghiblis in total. Just 426 of those would be the Ghibli SS, and of those, 413 were finished in left-hand drive, including this example.
Designed by a young Giorgetto Giugiaro—by this point, working for the Italian coachbuilder and designer, Ghia—the Ghibli wears attractive looks true to a 2+2 grand tourer of its era. The hidden headlamps envelope the famous Maserati trident in the centre of a grille that foreshadowed the design evolution of cars by the marque in the 1970s, including the Khamsin.
This example, finished in a metallic Brown colour over cream leather interior, was delivered new to one Mr. Angelo Calligione of Merano, Italy, on 29 November 1972. In the mid-1990s, the Ghibli changed hands as its second owner in Bolzano—in the same region of South Tyrol, Italy—bought the car, and a paperwork trail records that that the Maserati was bought by Auto Vergiate, a collector car dealership and workshop in Varese, Lombardy, in 2012.
Documentation on file shows the car subsequently underwent an engine rebuild costing in excess of €20,000 with the workshop Santilli of Perugia. The car was then bought by a customer in Germany, at which point it underwent servicing work to the cost of €1,550 at Kipke Automobile in Hamburg in 2015, before being bought by Mr. Guikas. This appealing Ghibli SS is offered for sale with a cancelled German Fahrzeugbrief.
