Over the course Ferrari’s illustrious history, no design house has left a more indelible mark than Pininfarina, whose hand shaped some of Maranello’s most timeless icons. To honour the Turin coachbuilder’s 80th anniversary, Ferrari created the SA Aperta: a sublime open-top, front-engined V-12 named in tribute of Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina. Limited to just 80 examples, all spoken for before its public unveiling, the SA Aperta remains a rarefied celebration of Italian coachbuilding at its most evocative.
Unveiled at the 2010 Paris Salon, the SA Aperta featured the Tipo F140 CE 599 GTO’s uprated 6.0-litre V-12 and six-speed F1-style gearbox updated with the 599XX’s multi-shift Magneti Marelli Superfast II software mated with a Valeo 215-millimetre twin-plate clutch, delivering a visceral driving experience which was only amplified by its open-top configuration. With a storming 661 horsepower on tap at 8,250 rpm and 457 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm, performance was truly scintillating. The sprint from 0-100 km/h was dispatched in an astonishing 3.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 325 km/h.
The SA Aperta’s chassis was meticulously reengineered to deliver the torsional rigidity of a closed berlinetta, yet with only a minimal gain in weight. Ride height has been reduced by 10 millimetres, with stiffer anti-roll bars and recalibrated magnetic dampers contributing to its sharpened dynamics. There were also unique five-spoke, 20-inch wheels shod with 245/35 ZR20 tyres at the front, and immense 305/35 ZR20 rubber at the rear, plus carbon-ceramic brakes for ultimate stopping power. Maranello’s F1-Trac traction control system, first seen on the 599 GTB, endowed the SA Aperta with both thrilling performance and remarkable poise, ensuring the car remained as wonderfully forgiving as it was engaging.
Visually arresting and aerodynamically purposeful, the SA Aperta further distinguished itself with a raked windscreen, body-coloured rear bumper, and larger front cooling ducts to enhance its aggressive posture. Signature details include its aerodynamic fins stretching from the A-pillars to the roll hoops that reinforce the cherished model’s open-air identity. Very much a minimalist roadster rather than a cosseting drophead, only the simplest weather gear was provided. As the name suggested, this Ferrari was intended to be enjoyed in open guise.
The stunning SA Aperta on offer, chassis 184568, was sold new in April 2012 through Ferrari of Basel, Switzerland and finished as it presents today in the sensational one-off livery of Blu Pozzi with Bianco Avus accents over a cabin trimmed in Rosso leather with Bianco detailing. Adorned with the large version of the hand-painted Scuderia wing shields, it has been configured with an absolutely astonishing list of options, such as diamond stitching, two-tone seats, piano black central console, Avus White dashboard plate, and Blu soft top. It has led a life of careful stewardship, supported by a service booklet with stampings which detail regular maintenance by Ferrari of Basel both under its original owner, who at an early point fitted the car with 599 GTO wheels. The acquisition by the Tailored For Speed Collection was completed in May 2015.
In January 2025, the car received a new battery and general freshening by Ferrari of Basel, promptly followed by a fluid and filter service carried out by Kessel of Zug in February 2025. Now displaying just 6,214 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, the car is accompanied by service invoices and a collection of owner’s manuals in an SA Aperta-badged black suede wallet. The Ferrari is noted to retain its matching-numbers V-12 engine.
The SA Aperta stands as one of Ferrari’s most exclusive and emotionally charged creations, merging the raw performance of the 599 GTO with the elegance of a Pininfarina design in a masterstroke of modern automotive art. Presented in a show-stopping configuration and boasting both documented maintenance and a four-digit odometer reading, this example invites the discerning enthusiast to revel in the unfiltered thrill of its naturally aspirated V-12 beneath open skies.
