Regarded as perhaps the most important of Stanley Wanlass’ limited-edition, automotive-themed bronze sculptures, “Passing of the Horse” celebrates the evolution of transportation in the early 20th century with its depiction of a Brass Era touring car passing a horse and its rider. This example, signed “Wanlass 83,” carries even more significance. It is marked “EC” for “Exhibit Copy,” which signifies that Wanlass himself regarded it as the best out of all examples produced of this piece. Wanless displayed it in his private Turret Gallery, which houses pieces for sale and to be sent out for exhibition, as this particular sculpture was numerous times, prior to the consignor acquiring it directly from the artist in 2016.
