Some of the most fascinating American automobiles were not born in factories, but in the minds of enthusiasts—resourceful individuals working with limited means and limitless imagination. It was likely such a mind, decades ago, that first gazed upon a retired fire truck—with its magnificent engine, chain-drive layout, and robust chassis—and saw potential. Renowned for their heroic duty in the first decades of the 20th century, these custom-built American LaFrance Speedsters are not factory automobiles but magnificent reinterpretations: Fire trucks reborn as grand touring leviathans.
Beneath their dramatically elongated hoods is a colossal 14-liter (855 cubic inch) T-head inline six-cylinder engine mated to a three-speed gearbox and dual-chain-drive rear axle, all combining for a viscerally elemental driving experience. Each American LaFrance Speedster is effectively a one-off, hand-built with period-inspired coachwork, brass detailing, and button-tufted upholstery, evoking the spirit of the Mercer Raceabout and Stutz Bearcat, but on an even grander scale.
Built from a 1916 American LaFrance fire truck, this unique Speedster features an elegant cream finish with red pinstripes, set atop a matching red chassis and undercarriage. The right-hand-drive cockpit stands out with its freshly upholstered red leather seats and a finely crafted wooden dashboard. Additional highlights include wooden-spoke wheels, dual rear-mounted spare tires, an imposing header side-pipe exhaust, and a sculpted aerodynamic driver fairing. Other period-correct details include a Boyce MotoMeter, side-mounted toolbox, plated headlights, and a neatly detailed cylindrical fuel tank. Since acquiring the car, the consignor has significantly upgraded its drivability and safety by adding power steering and modern disc brakes—modifications that dramatically enhance low-speed maneuverability, braking confidence, and overall control, especially important given the car’s considerable size and torquey engine. These thoughtful updates make the Speedster far more usable on the road while preserving its vintage character.
The American LaFrance Speedster deserves its place on any shortlist of ultimate American hot rods. More than a car, it is a kinetic sculpture—a bold celebration of power, presence, and unrepeatable character.
