Rambler’s top-of-the-line Ambassador 990 gained a convertible model for the first time in 1965. All Ambassadors grew four inches in wheelbase and five inches overall that year and were significantly restyled that year, receiving crisp lines anchored by a new front end with vertically stacked quad headlamps and slim, sculpted taillamps. The rarest by far of the Ambassador’s five body styles available for 1965 was the new convertible, of which only 3,499 were built, making them relatively uncommon today.
Presented in attractive Woodside Green Metallic with a two-tone green vinyl interior, this award-winning Ambassador 990 was previously owned by noted collector William Thomas “Tom” Gerrard, and is said to have been professionally restored by Harbor Auto Restorations in 2008. Notably, the car is equipped with the rare factory air conditioning and optional 270-horsepower, 327-cubic-inch V-8 engine featuring a four-barrel carburetor and a 9.7:1 compression ratio. It is paired with a Flash-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission driving a 3.15:1 rear axle.
Well-optioned, this Ambassador also features reclining bucket seats with headrests, power steering, power brakes, front power windows, tinted glass, deluxe seat belts, a windshield washer, remote driver’s side mirror, deluxe spinner wheel covers, center console with locking compartment, front bumper guards, and a power convertible top.
Under Gerrard’s ownership, the convertible was shown extensively at Antique Automobile Club of America events and garnered impressive accolades, culminating in Senior Grand National First Prizes in 2012.
Since entering Sonny Schwartz’s Suzy Q Collection in July 2018, this important award-winning Rambler 990 has been much admired though rarely driven, making it highly attractive to Rambler enthusiasts wishing to continue showing it or simply enjoying its potent V-8 on the road.
