Introduced in 1955 as a two-passenger roadster, the Ford Thunderbird quickly became a cultural icon. However, by the end of its first generation, Ford chairman Robert McNamara sought to reposition the model for broader market appeal. His directive led to the launch of the second-generation Thunderbird in 1958, a bold, four-seat “personal luxury car” that signaled a shift in philosophy and design.

Wider, lower, and more sculptural than its predecessor, the new Thunderbird offered both performance and comfort. Its interior was upscale and driver-focused, featuring standard front bucket seats and a center console—unusual for an American car at the time. Beneath the stylish bodywork was robust engineering, with V-8 power and a host of luxury features. Though initially controversial, the move to a four-seater configuration proved prescient; the model—affectionately known as the “Squarebird”—achieved strong sales and helped define a new market segment.

This marvelous 1960 Thunderbird Convertible from the final year of the model’s second generation is one of just 11,680 produced. Originally delivered in Moroccan Ivory with black and white upholstery, it now features a striking Raven Black finish over a tan leather interior and matching convertible top. Previously owned by renowned collector Milton Robson and then later by Michael Leith, the car was professionally restored some years ago under prior ownership and has been driven sparingly since.

Power comes from the 352-cubic-inch V-8 rated at 300 horsepower, mated to Ford’s Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. Its impressive list of equipment includes, factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, a power seat, Magic Aire heater/defroster, pushbutton AM radio, and the standard power-operated soft-top that neatly retracts beneath a hinged decklid. Additional highlights include chrome wire wheels with spinner caps, whitewall tires, a continental kit, and tinted glass.

Increasingly sought after by collectors for its blend of dramatic styling, strong mechanicals, and luxurious appointments, this handsome Thunderbird offers a superb opportunity to experience one of the most distinctive American convertibles of the era.
