For the 1957 model year, Oldsmobile celebrated its 50th anniversary by offering various new options, revised model dimensions, and new styling across the lineup. One of the year’s most impressive revelations was the Golden Rocket 88 Holiday, a one-year-only update in both name and image of the entry-level series offered on the 122-inch-wheelbase platform introduced three years prior.

Leading up to 1957, Oldsmobile’s styling efforts largely consisted of reconfiguring beltlines and roof treatments, making for airier cabins with increasingly slim roof pillars or, in the case of the Holiday Hardtop, no B-pillars at all. Bolstered by its commemorative name and a more powerful 371-cubic-inch V-8 engine appropriately clad in gold enamel, the two-door body style of the 1957 Golden Rocket 88 Holiday and its higher trim-level sibling, the Super 88 Holiday, would become the most acclaimed Oldsmobile coupe of the decade. From the side view, onlookers were treated to a pillarless “Sky-Line” roof floating delicately above a beltline that dove down at the door’s trailing edge, only to rise sharply upward into a sculpted shoulder below the C-pillar—overall, a stunning design then and now.

One of these impressive coupes is offered here from Sonny Schwartz’s Suzy Q Collection. The car’s trim tag notes that it was originally painted in Alcan White with an Alcan White roof and black accents alongside Alcan White trim over white-and-black vinyl upholstery. Sold new in California, the original owner from Burbank retained the car until September 1975, as confirmed by registration documents on file. Another resident of the same town would purchase and hold onto the coupe until March 1998, when the consignor acquired it.

From 2003 to 2006, Theatrical Auto of Hollywood, California comprehensively refurbished the coupe, refinishing the exterior in Desert Glow, a highly attractive color that Oldsmobile offered from the factory. The interior was refinished in attractive tri-tone white, gray, and black vinyl. Other notable line items in the $33,000 of invoices on file include a full engine rebuild and new chrome, trim, hardware, and glass throughout. The wheels have been color-matched to the body and are wrapped in wide whitewall tires. Desirable period-correct options include power steering, a Wonderbar Super Deluxe radio, dash clock, and Autronic-Eye automatic headlight dimmer.

With a history file confirming just three recorded owners since 1957 and benefitting from a previous multi-year refurbishment under the consignor’s ownership, this one-year-only Holiday Hardtop Coupe offers a compelling blend of prestige, presentation, and provenance.
