Hudson’s Custom Commodore Six Convertible Brougham represents the high point of one of America’s most innovative independent automakers. As Hudson’s top-of-the-line six-cylinder model, the Custom Commodore was a showcase of elegant postwar styling, advanced engineering, and understated luxury, delivering a refined motoring experience in contrast to more flamboyant offerings from Detroit’s “Big Three.”
Powering the Commodore Six was a smooth, torque-rich 262-cubic-inch straight six-cylinder engine, widely praised for its reliability and robust performance. The car was constructed on Hudson’s groundbreaking “Monobilt” step-down chassis, an innovative unibody design that lowered the center of gravity by seating passengers within the frame rails. This engineering breakthrough delivered exceptional handling, comfort, and safety, while the step-down’s low, wide, and aerodynamic silhouette provided spacious interiors and distinctive road manners that set Hudson apart from its peers. The innovative chassis layout not only enhanced everyday driving but also translated to motorsport success, with Hudsons dominating early Nascar races.
Visually, the Convertible Brougham perfectly embodied the postwar era’s characteristic understated elegance. Its sleek chrome accents and meticulously tailored soft-top complement the long, flowing lines, while the spacious cabin features generous seating for six, rich appointments, and comprehensive instrumentation.
Offered as part of Sonny Schwartz’s Suzy Q Collection, this Custom Commodore Six Convertible Broughman is finished in a lovely color scheme of pale yellow over rich maroon leather. In addition to its top-of-the-line brightwork, the car is further equipped with an overdrive transmission, hydraulic window lifts, quadruple bumper guards, push-button radio, dash-mounted clock, heater, dual spotlights, amber fog lights, power top, and a Hudson-branded tissue dispenser under the dashboard. It rides on wide whitewall tires mounted to steel wheels with attractive wire covers.
Hudson’s Custom Commodore Six Convertible Brougham endures as an elegant and forward-thinking symbol of American automotive innovation, cherished by collectors for its rarity, pioneering construction, and graceful fusion of prewar craftsmanship with postwar modernity.
