In 1928, Chrysler introduced the DeSoto as a mid-priced model to compete with Buick, Hudson, Oldsmobile, and Studebaker—not to mention Dodge and Plymouth, which the company had just acquired. It was a challenging enterprise in a crowded field, but the new brand pulled through its early years with the help of the CF Eight, an example of which is offered here.
Featuring Chrysler’s first eight-cylinder engine, the Desoto was dubbed “the world’s lowest-priced straight-eight,” promising customers “a vast reserve of power when you need it.” Though the latter assertion was an overstatement, the engine was robust, reliable, and relatively easy to service. DeSoto produced just 1,457 examples of the CF Eight Roadster for the 1930 model year at a starting price of $985.
The consignor acquired this restored example in 2014, following a period of hibernation under prior ownership. It wears a vivacious color scheme of yellow with black fenders over handsome black leather upholstery, deftly highlighted by red pinstriping on the color-matched wheels. The tan canvas top coordinates nicely and works in conjunction with included side curtains to protect occupants from inclement weather. A supplied tonneau cover in the same material provides a tidy top-down appearance.
Notable equipment that enhances both visual and practical appeal includes wind wings, a rearview mirror, cowl lights, Trippe Speedlights, a single windshield wiper, and a rear-mounted spare tire. Said to have been an award winner at events years ago, its restoration has since mellowed with signs of gentle use, particularly on the interior and engine bay.
An uncommon find, this DeSoto CF Eight will certainly deliver much enjoyment to its next owner.
