The Rolls-Royce Silver Spur made its debut in 1980 as the long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit. The model would remain in production through 2000. During the 20-year production run numerous upgrades were made, accounting for four generations of the model, and by 1996 the Silver Spur was entering what would be its final iteration.
Rather than calling the new model the Silver Spur IV, Rolls-Royce chose to drop the numerical suffix, referring to the new model simply as the Silver Spur. The “New Silver Spur,” as it was sometimes called, featured similar specifications to the Silver Spur III albeit with faster acceleration and a slightly higher top speed of 140 mph. Design-wise the "New Silver Spur" featured the iconic Rolls-Royce radiator and Flying Lady mascot, although both would be reduced in size; the radiator by two inches, and the mascot by nearly 20 percent. Other exterior changes included sideview mirrors becoming window-mounted, newly designed 16-inch wheels, rubberized stone chip protection color-matched to the body color and added to the sills and wheel wells, and the front bumper now featuring an integrated air dam. Interior changes included a revised console design with a new entertainment system, new seats, and an electronically adjusted steering wheel with an automatic lift feature to ease access to the driver’s seat.
This 1998 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur left the factory finished in Silver Pearl with Sandstone fine lines (pinstripes). The interior was trimmed in Sandstone leather with Saraha lambswool rugs and burlwood and Soft Tan leather accents. A left-hand-drive example built to US specifications, the Rolls-Royce was shipped onboard cargo ship Mayview Maersk, arriving at the Los Angeles, California port of entry on 27 August 1997. It was sold new through Symbolic Motor Car Co. of La Jolla, California.
While the first owner was not recorded, Symbolic sold the car as a pre-owned example to Mrs. Penny Guttersen of Colorado in June of 1998 with 3,159 miles. The car would return to Symbolic for service and would eventually be sold once again through Symbolic to Robert Fletcher of New Jersey in November of 2002 with 7,728 miles. While subsequent owners are not known, the car returned to Colorado under present ownership when purchased in May of 2017. In March of 2019 the Rolls-Royce received a new radiator and an oil and filter service, as well as the replacement of the A/C belt, air pump belt, alternator belt, and twin drive belts.
Today the Silver Spur, having covered 49,584 miles from new at time of cataloguing, is offered with copies of Rolls-Royce records and an invoice for the aforementioned 2019 service.
