Following World War II, growing demand in Italy for practical yet affordable transport propelled the Fiat 600 to become a bestseller by 1956, when the Multipla version was first launched. This new model, however, soon found a loyal following of its own.

Designed to fulfil the needs of larger families and commercial users, the Fiat 600 Multipla was conceived by Dante Giacosa. Giacosa’s design was truly a feat of engineering and deft packaging. By extending the passenger compartment over the front wheels and moving the engine to the rear, he created one of the first successful mono-space cars and was able to fit six seats within a vehicle that was only 11 feet, 6.9 inches long.

Three versions of the Mulitpla were available, including a four/five-seater with bench seats front and rear, which could be folded to make a bed. The six-seater had a front bench and four individual seats that folded completely flat into the floor. Finally, a taxi version had a single seat and luggage platform in front, separate folding seats in the middle, and a bench seat in back, together with a cabin divider.

Besides the bodywork, differences from the standard saloon included, an auxiliary radiator up front, wishbone front suspension, specific gear ratios, worm-and-roller steering, a slightly larger fuel tank, and interior lamps.

This restored 1969 Multipla is a highly attractive example finished in lovely two-tone white and red. Chrome bumpers, headlight trim rings, wheel covers, and grille further aid in providing this diminutive people mover with tons of style. The interior completes the cheerful appearance with matching red vinyl seats with white piping.

Despite its small size, the Multipla is the perfect vehicle for sharing a midcentury motoring experience with a group of friends and family. Endlessly stylish, yet practical in equal measure, this Fiat endures as a motoring icon.
