  • Nicely set up for driving enjoyment

20 bhp, 176.7 cu. in. four-cylinder inline L-head engine, two-speed planetary transmission with reverse, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, transmission brake, and rear-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 100 in.

Affectionately known as the “Tin Lizzie” and the “Flivver,” the Model T remained in production in the same basic form for 19 years, during which time approximately 15 million examples were built. The Model T was significantly restyled during its lengthy production cycle in both 1917 and 1925. Exterior finishes other than black were first available on the closed models in 1926, followed shortly thereafter by the open cars.

Mechanical refinements for 1926 included a lengthened rear frame crossmember, revised springs and spindles, and a one-inch lower ride height. Braking was improved with 11-inch rear brake drums and enlarged foot pedals, and the internally mounted transmission brake was also enlarged, providing improved performance and operating life.

The 1926 Model T Depot Hack presented here continues to display as a well-maintained, older restoration. It is finished with black fenders and a black forward section, and it features professionally constructed oak and mahogany rear bodywork, with three rows of seating for six. The vehicle is further accented by red pinstriping, red painted wood-spoke wheels, new four-ply tires, a side-mounted spare wheel and tire, Ford accessory aluminum step plates, electric cowl lights, a Coleman accessory spotlight, and a vinyl-covered roof.

The chassis is also very clean and attractive, with a fresh gloss black finish, while a correct and nicely detailed four-cylinder engine provides power, with a factory-installed electric starter for ease of operation. The owner reports that, in his ownership, the engine has been rebuilt and resealed, the transmission has been inspected for excellent operation, and the radiator was replaced with a new unit by Model T specialists Lang’s Old Car Parts. A Snyder’s ignition system was installed, and as a result, the truck starts right up and runs and drives perfectly.

This very attractive Model T runs and drives very well, and true to form, it is an enjoyable early Ford for both novice and seasoned collectors alike. There is perhaps no more historically significant car to own, as it is relatively easy to drive, it is simple to maintain, and it is very robust. It is sure to inject a bit of fun into any collection.
