Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, and the 1960s in particular, Cadillac remained the undisputed leader of the American luxury car market. For 1965, Cadillac positioned itself for continued success with its completely restyled models. Most noticeably, the dated tailfins were finally eliminated in favor of a pair of smart, blade-type rear fenders, while bodylines assumed a much crisper overall design theme.

Reduced noise, vibration and harshness levels, as well as greater interior space, were achieved with a new perimeter frame that replaced the outdated X-member arrangement of the late 1950s and allowed the engine to be moved forward six inches. In describing the new ’65 design, Cadillac General Manager Harold Warner stated, “Our objective was a car that says Cadillac even if all divisional insignia is removed.” Indeed, the overall result was both an unqualified success and a design statement of pure, understated elegance “laid out with an architect’s precision,” according to Motor Trend magazine. For 1966, changes were few. Mechanical features included a 340-horsepower 429-cubic inch V-8 engine, teamed with the excellent Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission that first appeared in 1964.

This particular 1966 Coupe DeVille has traveled only about 6,000 actual miles since it was sold new 45 years ago. Its unusual and desirable options, in addition to Cadillac’s many other standard features, include a six-way power front seat and a signal-seeking radio. With its clean and elegant styling and sophisticated engineering, this incredibly original 1966 Cadillac Coupe DeVille is quite possibly the finest example available today. With increasing collector interest, low-mileage examples such as this deserve close attention.
