In 1970, Chevrolet enlarged the big-block engine by stroking the 427-cid version to an even four inches, resulting in 454.2 cubic inches. There were three versions. A low-performance LS4 variant, offered in full-size cars, had two-bolt mains, small-port heads, hydraulic lifters and cast-iron intake manifold. It was equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and developed 345-hp.

More potent was the LS5, the medium-performance version. Very much the same as the LS4, it was used in Corvettes, where it was rated at 390-hp, and in Chevelles, rated 360-hp. Some attribute the difference to emission controls. An even more energetic 454 was available as the 450-hp LS6.

This car has the LS5 hydraulic lifter engine, mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It has cowl induction, hood pins, factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, AM/FM radio with embedded windshield antenna, windshield washers, and, somewhat unusually, a bench front seat. The interior is black vinyl with matching headliner, all in excellent condition.

The recipient of a frame-up restoration in 1995, it still presents extremely well in gold with black stripes. Contours and paint are excellent, and brightwork very good. The engine compartment is clean and correct, not over-detailed. The undercarriage is sanitary in black, but shows some use. Rally-type SS wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. This car has not been a trailer queen, it has been driven and enjoyed. The 54,000 miles showing on the odometer give credence to this though the title shows exempt, as does the original interior and paint. Correct and clean, it is ready to be enjoyed.
