The Dodge Challenger may have come late to the pony car party – ground the Mustang and Camaro had thoroughly staked out by 1970 – but its arrival brought new life to the festivities. It matched its rivals option for option in the market, and buyers could configure everything from a 225-cid six-cylinder hardtop stripper to a fully loaded R/T with 426-cid, 425-hp Hemi V-8 power. The Challenger’s timing was unfortunate because the American public’s high-performance infatuation began to wane in the early 1970s; Dodge only produced its pony car through model year 1974.
