This car is a tribute to a 1950s Chevrolet racing icon that has at times been called the “first factory hotrod.” When 1957 Chevrolet’s were arriving at dealerships in late 1956, a Chevrolet branch in Atlanta, GA, named Southern Engineering Development Corporation (SEDCO) began to build cars for the American racing scene, based on the 150 utility sedan. The goal was to compete with the Ford and Chrysler racing teams of that time. Known early on as Duntov Chevy’s (for Zora Arkus-Duntov, the “father of the Corvette”), then simply as “black and whites,” the name “Black Widow finally stuck. It is thought that this moniker was first used when SEDCO built a few Chevrolet 150’s for NASCAR competition. Champion driver, Buck Baker, was one of the drivers for this formidable team. To this day the “Black Widow” remains a source of debate amongst Chevrolet enthusiasts. The build and survival quantities have never been proven conclusively, hence the continuing fascination.
