The Dino was born in the mid-sixties out of an agreement between Fiat and Ferrari to homologate a six-cylinder engine for Formula 2, warranting production of at least 500 road-going units. Thanks to its tractability and exhilarating performance, the wonderful twin-cam, all-alloy V-6 design saw extensive use by both companies, notably in the Lancia Stratos and the Ferrari Dino 206 and 246 GT. Fiat also offered its own V-6–powered Dino, sold as both a Bertone-designed coupe and Pininfarina-designed spider, with either 2.0- or 2.4-liter engines.

The Giallo Colorado Dino offered here is an early example of the rare 2400 spider, equipped with the larger and more powerful engine, and was acquired by the current collection from the personal stable of Chicago-area Ferrari dealer John Weinberger. The car was reportedly restored in 1998, although the original interior was preserved. The paintwork is in good condition, and the interior is in remarkable order for its age. A modern radio has been fitted in the dashboard, which appears to otherwise remain original. Partial invoices from service work by Continental Motorsports in Mr. Weinberger’s ownership are included in the file, along with a deluxe Dino sales brochure. At the time of cataloguing, the car had recorded 89,808 kilometers.

Few examples of the Dino spider remain on the road in this country, and fewer still are the desirable 2400 iteration, of which this is an especially attractive specimen.
